April 28, 2017 Rhythms + Visions /Expanded + Live 3. Work from over 60 of our current students, alumni and faculty will be featured in the event!

DESCRIPTION:
Rhythms + Visions / Expanded + Live 3 will light up the outdoor spaces of the USC School of Cinematic Arts Complex in an evening of music, interactive animation, projection mapping, animated inflatables, and virtual reality. Innovative artists Refik Anadol, Miwa Matreyek, and Patterson + Reckinger will perform an eclectic program of contemporary visual music and audio-visual art.

Groundbreaking artist Refik Anadol, who has performed visuals with the L.A. Philharmonic at Disney Hall, will create imagery on a super-panoramic 70-foot screen to live performances by Grammy Award–winning pianist Gloria Cheng and guzheng player Zi-Zhu Zhao. Patterson + Reckinger’s kinetic op-art abstractions will be accompanied by toy piano trio, Thomas Feng, Alexa Constantine, Dante Luna. Music by composers John Adams, Esa Pekka Salonen (piano), Tristan Perich (3 toy pianos and 3-channel, one-bit electronics) and Pantawit Kiangsiri (guzheng) will be performed live.

On a second stage, Miwa Matreyek performs her fantastical shadow theatre work, The World Made Itself, inside a multi-projection stage. Miwa takes us on a journey through her surrealistic and magical worlds as she interacts within the projection. She has performed her work at MoMA, the Tate Modern, REDCAT, and Sundance. The VR Visual Music Lounge will offer exciting virtual-reality musical experiences and interactive installations from international artists as well as USC faculty and students.

Check out this teaser for the Bjork VR experience, which will be featured in the VR Visual Music Lounge.

Presented by USC Visions and Voices: The Arts and Humanities Initiative. Produced by Michael Patterson, Candace Reckinger, Eric Hanson (Cinematic Arts).

Winsor & Newton introduce the new MasterClass series

"It’s free to all and will be a first-of-its-kind tutorial running throughout the year, filling a crucial gap in artistic education: the behaviours and properties of the mediums themselves. Aimed at fine art students, these short tutorial videos unlock the secrets of colour and chemistry and set the viewer on the path to true mastery of the field.”

Winsor & Newton’s heritage spans an impressive 184 years. It’s a heritage founded on innovation, dedication, and the tireless pursuit of perfection — values that have inspired generations of artists and continue to do so today.

In its latest venture, Winsor & Newton is reaching out to artists around the world to offer guidance and artistic insight. Masterclass is a series of informative video tutorials for those seeking to improve their technique and stretch their artistic knowledge base. Packed with technical discourse and expertise, it’s a learning tool artists won’t want to miss.

Thinking Animation - New Maya Rigs Section

Every day riggers are releasing more and more really well-done rigs for FREE! So, I have re-worked my Maya Rig section to accommodate.

The rigs listed in the Maya section on the left menu have all been tested at some point by myself and/or my students. These are the rigs I recommend.

I have separated the rigs by the level of detail and controls.

Don't forget to check out the RIGS FUNCTIONS LIST and INTRODUCTION, too.

19 Smiles and Only 6 Are for Happiness

BBC Future Tells Us Why Smiles Are Not All The Same

Our grins are not as simple as they seem. There are a myriad different ways to smile – and some of them can conceal some less than happy feelings.

Of 19 different types of smile, only six occur when we’re having a good time. The rest happen when we’re in pain, embarrassed, uncomfortable, horrified or even miserable. A smile may mean contempt, anger or incredulity, that we’re lying or that we’ve lost.

Fire saved man and comforted him.

Winning the Story Wars - The Hero's Journey

Here's part two of the video series that accompanies Jonah Sachs' new book, "Winning the Story Wars." Discover how digital tools are returning humanity to a new oral tradition and what kinds of stories will work in this new era of empowerment marketing. Inspired by Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, Sachs lays out a story model any brand or cause can use to get its message heard, and explains why stories must be not just told, but lived.

Making of A Monster Calls (Animation Sequence)

More than two years ago, Glassworks Barcelona teamed up to direct and craft the two animated stories embedded in “A Monster Calls”, J. A. Bayona’s new movie, based in the homonymous novel by Patrick Ness. Two metaphorical fables that help understanding episodes of reality that are difficult to explain through traditional narrative.

After all this time, and despite the research work done, it’s also very complicated for us to put in words what this experience has meant. This project enabled us meeting wonderful artists, with whom we had never collaborated before; people more fantastic than the tales we all made possible. Thanks everyone for putting all your love and a little bit of your life in these stories.

The Artistry Of 'Samurai Jack'

If you were watching Cartoon Network in the late '90s and early 2000s, you probably have Genndy Tartakovsky to thank for some of your favorite cartoons.

But one of his cartoons stands above the rest as a visual and animated masterpiece — "Samurai Jack." With it's unique drawing style, distinct minimalist feel, and perfectly choreographed action sequences "Samurai Jack" has gone down as a seminal work in cartoon history.

Never having received the ending it deserved, "Samurai Jack" is finally returning to Adult Swim this weekend to finish the epic animated tale started way back in 2001.
