New Luna Rig - FREE!

I have't tested it yet, but here is a new rig released by Adien Dendra.  Once I test it with my students and it passes, I will add it to the approved rig list.  Comment with your notes on how you think it works and strengths and weaknesses!

Looks to me like she can go off model quickly which makes it hard to teach with this rig with beginners.  Her fingers are designed poorly - too spread out and do not bend cleanly but maybe she would work well for body mechanics shots where fingers are not as important?

P.S. it comes with a shelf and GUI Picker

AUTO NOM

https://vimeo.com/221472035

Oh hello lovely machine, emancipating yourself from function... You look adorable, you know? Yes dear, you were built to be autonomous, it said so in the campaign brief.
No rush – getting from A to B was never an exciting idea to begin with, for your kind. Dance yourself clean, pull your metal frame apart and let the sun burn through your circuits. Ride your autobiography, guided by the beauty of your code.
Fresh freedom smells like common place, and "authenticity" like a frivolous illusion of your makers. So your character was designed to be self-organizing: a beautiful homage to the combined effort of all of those minds that built you – considering your appearance being a quite sloppy imitation of life.
Regardless that those who started this are no longer around:
Still looking forward to your feedback.
What do *you* think?

Auto Nom offers an upbeat alternative on unexpected consequences of autonomous mobility. It is the latest work by ZEITGUISED’s new offspin f°am Studio, and part of a series of character animation narratives based on the personality of Autonomous Rolf. Written, directed and designed by f°am Studio, this fictitious self-driving classic german car gets under your hood with its freedom loving behaviour.

A music video made entirely from wood for a song by bedtimes.xxx/music, WoodSwimmer is based on a concept I developed while designing a new stop-motion universe where wood is the primary element. The sequences are cross-sectional photographic scans of pieces of hardwood, burls and branches. It is a straightforward technique but one which is brutally tedious to complete.

Wonder Woman buries The Mummy at the Domestic Box Office

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC FilmsWonder Woman won a second-straight weekend at the domestic box office with an impressive $57.2 million, a drop of just 45% in ticket sales (it’s usually 50 to 60% these days for a film’s second weekend). That’s higher than the second weekends of Man of Steel ($41.3 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($51.3 million) and Suicide Squad ($43.5 million), despite all three of those movies having bigger opening weekends. The domestic total now stands at $205 million. Internationally, Wonder Woman grossed $58.1 million from 57 markets this weekend and has now earned $230.2 million (with $68.4 million coming from China). That means the global total is now up to $435.2 million, with the film having not yet opened in countries such as Germany (June 15), Spain (June 23) and Japan (August 25). Made for $149 million and directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen and Lucy Davis.

Pixar reveals an all-Latino cast for Coco (and a new poster!)

Along with a beautiful new poster, Pixar released details today of the large cast of characters that we can look forward to seeing in Coco later this year, all voiced by actors of Latino descent (including Gabriel Iglesias, Renée Victor, Sofía Espinosa, and Edward James Olmos). It’s worth remembering that Pixar put a lot of effort into making the cast of Brave entirely Scottish or of Scottish descent (save a few lines of dialogue, like the now-essential John Ratzenberger cameo), so it’s great to see them doing the same and more for Coco.

-COCOON-

What is this? I don’t recognise this
Pain broke in
And took it all
Took the song from the Springtime
And the dance from the flame
Took the noonday warmth
And the morning hush

Now the ground’s spilling beneath me
The ropes are uncoiling
The trees are leafless
The sky is torn
My breath’s a broken feather
There’s no beauty left
There’s nothing here for me I’m paper thin
I’m in a room of shadows and it’s caving in
I’m turning in circles
I’m giving up
The world is giddy
The sense is gone
The floor is an ocean
I’m sinking in

Where are You now?
Where is Your touch?
Where is the reason?
The answer?
The end?
Now I’m chasing Your shadow
And I’m grasping for questions
I’m calling out
I’m asking why?

Yet when I turn You turn
When I reach You reach
And in the searing burn
You wait for me
Dress my tears in kisses
Cradle my grief
Touch me in the silence
Hold me in the heat
And when the ragings rush
Drown me in defeat
I make my bed of dust
And you lie with me

Robot & Scarecrow

Set amidst the euphoric madness of a summer music festival, Robot & Scarecrow is a uniquely modern fairy tale about love. When a robot pop diva flees her keepers she runs straight into the arms of a lonely scarecrow desperate for adventure. They spend an incredible night together, caught in a heady vortex of music and magic:

Produced by Factory Fifteen and Nexus, the 15-minute-long Robot & Scarecrow was commissioned by social media network Vero and Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan’s production company DMC Film under a new partnership initiative aimed at supporting emerging directors. The CG-driven short, which stars Jack O'Connell and Holliday Grainger, was shot at U.K. music festival Secret Garden Party by cinematographer Luke Jacobs, and was directed by London-based director Kibwe Tavares (JonahRobots of Brixton) and produced by Daniel Emmerson (Assassin’s Creed12 Years A Slave).

Legio XVII

https://vimeo.com/216002023

Jérémy Cisse presents his new short film LEGIO XVII, directed during his 4th year at Supinfocom Valenciennes.

The story was inspired by a historic battle of the ancient Rome, when the Germans clans join the rebellion organized by Arminius and push the Romans out of the Germania.

Germania, 9 ap. J.-C.

The story was inspired by a historic battle of the ancient Rome when the Germans clans join the rebellion organized by Arminius and push the Romans out of the Germania. This Roman army was the greatest army of this time, composed by three legions ( XVII, XVIII, and XIX ). Arminius had an army much less important and yet, he decides to attack the biggest Roman army on the German territory. He attracted them into the forest and took them in ambush.

All three legions were destroyed in what is known as the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, After their destruction, the Romans never used these legion numbers (XVII, XVIII, and XIX) again and never come back to Germania.

How to Make a Shot List Like Terrence Malick Movies

https://vimeo.com/220070932

I have added this breakdown on how to create a shot list to my CG Pipeline Tools Page.

Building a better movie from the lens out.

A shot list, in case you don’t know, is the most basic blueprint of a film and the visual equivalent of a script. Most folks think of storyboards in this regard, but where storyboards hypothesize the finished look of a scene, the shot list is the step-by-step guide to where and when to use the camera, it establishes camera angles, height, distance from the subject, duration of the shot, and the specific means to capture it.

In the hands of most filmmakers, the shots disappear into the narrative, they are serving the story and thus take a backseat themselves; but in certain masterful cinematic hands – like, say, those of director Terrence Malick and his go-to cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki – the shot list and the items on it share the spotlight with the narrative, telling their own independent yet complementary story that when merged with the story of words makes for a more holistic and resonant film.

Like every other filmmaker, Malick has shot types that he tends to favor and repeat; unlike every other filmmaker, the way Malick deploys these shots is tailored for a variety of emotional effects, all of which are on display in the following video from StudioBinder that functions two-fold: once as a look at Malick’s specific shot palette, and again as a primer on how to create your own functioning shot list.

We started with allot of experimenting in 3D, exploring the themes of death and decay, transformation and rebirth. Bjork fell in love with the organic/biological tests we had done early on and we set out to build on this theme.

We used Maya and V-ray as our rendering platform and Houdini to generate the detailed growth systems.

STEVEN UNIVERSE CREATOR REBECCA SUGAR ON ANIMATION AND THE POWER OF EMPATHY

Article - The Verge by

Western animation is in the middle of a golden age. Shows like BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty have emerged as the new standard-bearers for a kind of cartoon that’s sharp, funny, and insightful, capable of dealing with startlingly nuanced themes, like BoJack’s honest reflections on the nature of unhappiness. But few efforts in any medium can manage Steven Universe’s trick of exploring topics like intimacy, love, abuse, and the constant threat of annihilation while balancing them with thoughts on the simple joy of eating a hot dog. The series started out as a slice-of-life show about a young boy and his magical family, but it’s emerged as one of the most daring, open-hearted series on television today.

The creative force behind the series is Emmy-nominated writer Rebecca Sugar, Cartoon Network’s first female showrunner. Originally a storyboard revisionist for Adventure Time, she broke out on her own to launch Steven Universe in 2013, blending her love of superheroes and magical-girl anime with a story about a kid not unlike her own little brother, Steven Sugar. Four years later, the show has gotten much more complicated; a recent arc sees Steven abducted by his alien enemies, and being put on trial for his mother’s ancient war crimes. But at its heart, the show is still very much about relationships and family in all their forms.
