MAVKA. The Forest Song. Official Teaser Trailer 1

https://youtu.be/effkoBQqm7g

Watch the new teaser trailer of Ukrainian animated feature film ‘Mavka. The Forest Song’!
The magic world of the ancient forest, incredible adventures and fantastic heroes that will soon be discovered by the whole world! Mavka - a soul of the Forest, she is nature herself, she is complex, mysterious and two-folded: tender and caring when in love, but fierce and defensive when hurt. Nevertheless, her main feature is that she always strives for peace and harmony. This is the story about the magical power of love.

Since time immemorial, the vast Ukrainian forests have harbored countless secrets and unfathomable mysteries. They are home to wondrous mythical creatures dwelling among ancient trees, faithfully guarding their sacred realm. Mavka is a soul of the Forest. Her primary mission is to protect the Forest and its sacrosanct Heart – the source of life itself – against any aggression or intrusion, including on the part of humans. Lukash is an unassuming farm boy, who has a great love of music and pours his talent into playing the flute. It is largely thanks to Lukash’s music that a miracle takes place: Mavka and Lukash meet and fall in love. From the start, their union is pitted against formidable odds, but the obstacles loom even larger once the avaricious Evilyn arrives on the scene and sets about building a sawmill at the edge of the Forest. This serves as a façade to mask her true purpose: to get a hold of the Heart of the Forest – the key to which is Mavka herself, who is already rendered vulnerable by her blossoming feelings for Lukash. To get to Mavka, Evilyn wields Lukash as her weapon, and strikes anger and fear into the hearts of the villagers. Will Mavka and Lukash be able to defend their feelings for each other? Will Mavka be able to save the forest and protect her love? Will each of the two young lovers from different worlds make the right choice?

“Mavka. The Forest Song” is a full-length animated feature produced by Ukraine-based Animagrad (FILM.UA Group). It is currently at the stage of development. The film is inspired by a classical Ukrainian poem play by Lesya Ukrainka, as well as Ukrainian authentic mythology and legends. Mavka, the Forest princess — powerful female character with unique appearance and universal appeal, and has potential to be ranked with internationally celebrated personages. The heroes and themes elaborated in the story will appeal to adults and children worldwide, but its distinct Slavic spirit and authentic charm will set it apart from anything else in the genre.

Genre: fantasy, lovestory, comedy.
Production: Animagrad (FILM.UA Group).
Coming to theaters: 2019.
Supported by Ukrainian State Film Agency.
Soundtrack of the Teaser Trailer: DakhaBrakha.

Check out the breakdown here: https://youtu.be/xODCdqTWzRo

The MENDED LITTLE HEARTS organization supports children, patients and families suffering from congenital heart disease. To create more awareness of their important work, they commissioned BLACKLIST & STUDIO AKA to create a unique set of animations that illustrate the proposition that the more you donate the better the story gets.

There are five different versions of the animation which range from sparse renders in which most if not all the background is invisible, forcing us to rely on sounds and shadows only for instance - through a version with increasingly more apparent elements; and a final complete rendered version.

The perception of the same story told in different visual renders makes some subtle differences to how the story is perceived and rewards the commitment of the viewer with each successive viewing.

Film Contact 1997 - Brilliant Tricky Mirror Shot Explained

https://youtu.be/Fxa3j8bK-c4

Contact visual effects supervisors Ken Ralston and Stephen Rosenbaum explain how this amazing scene was shot.

From VFX Blog... read more here.

vfxblog: So how did you plan it and how did you pull it off? I think people are still bamboozled by it.

Ralston: Well, the idea was to present it in a simple way. The beauty of it is, anywhere else, there’d be cutaways of course to show what you need to know. So first of all, once we had it boarded, and I don’t think we ever did previs in those days on most things, but we knew what we wanted. Plus you have to realise, when you’re on a set you have to be there to let the reality of what you’re shooting dictate the next step sometimes. So the first thing you obviously have to get is her.

Mirror1

Our camera operator, who was also a great Steadicam operator, had to keep running up those stairs with her over and over, and he was dying. I forget how many takes we got of her running up. Plus there’s this ramp slow down, which is also happening as she runs up, it goes into slow-mo.

So, using all of that as her timing reference, then I try to figure out, well, okay what’s the simplest way of shooting her? Do I have to tell her where to reach so that the hand coming in from the other side matches as if it was a mirror reflection? It’s all just, how fast do we pull out of this mirror?

I’m trying to remember all the pieces that we shot. I know that we pulled back, we had the medicine cabinet obviously that we come into, and then the mirror closes slowly. That’s all these separate pieces. And the only reason to separate them is you never know down the line when the director might say, ‘Could we…’, and then they want to change it somehow. If you can break if up into little minuscule little parts, you can make your job a little easier. Although I don’t think we ever did anything on that.

I know we added bevels on the mirror, because there was no mirror, and it was just a blue screen stuck to a medicine cabinet mirror that should have been there. And we just put a little schmutz on it so it looked like it was a real thing, and on you go.

**Winner of Worldfest Huston International Film Festival 2017**
"Travelling Through Brush and Ink" is a stop-motion animation of a little modern man traveling through four significant ancient Chinese paintings, transforming himself into animals and plants, and becomes part of the nature. Each painting represents four important stages of landscape art in Chinese history. Based on the original paintings, we built the sets and animated little character inside- all frame by frame. The animation is the opening film of 2016 annual exhibition National Palace Museum Taiwan.

Patrick Osborne’s ‘Nimona’ Set for 2020 Release

From AWN:

Animated feature adaptation of the Harvey and Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel by ‘Lumberjanes’ creator Noelle Stevenson is currently in production at Blue Sky Studios for 20th Century Fox.

Nimona is a fantasy comic set in a medieval future where knights go to night clubs riding hoverboards and carrying swords. The graphic novel follows a young shape-shifter who teams up with a disgraced knight in order to reclaim his honor and overthrow a corrupt regime. Published in 2012, Stevenson wrote and drew Nimona as her thesis project at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The director of Disney’s 2014 Oscar-winning short film, Feast, Osborne was also the head of animation for Big Hero 6 and worked on several other Disney projects ranging from Wreck-It Ralph to Paperman. Osborne went on to direct the 2016 Academy Award-nominated short film and Virtual Reality experience Pearl for Google Spotlight Stories, as well as one season of Sony’s live-action/animation hybrid series Imaginary Mary, starring Jenna Elfman and an adorable CG-animated Mary, for ABC. Nimona will be Osborne’s feature film debut.

Nimona is written by former DreamWorks Animation executive Marc Haimes and produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment alongside the company’s president of production Adam Stone. Haimes previously wrote the script for LAIKA’s 2016 stop-motion feature Kubo and the Two Strings. The animated adaptation is currently in production at Blue Sky Studios, the animation studio behind the Ice Age and Rio movies, as well as 2015’s The Peanuts Movie.

Stevenson is also one of the creators of the graphic novel “Lumberjanes,” which Fox is also developing as a live-action feature.
