Big Chicken Small Movie to Life for KFC

https://youtu.be/RA0hHVK2DvM

I grew up in Marietta, GA and know the big Chicken Landmark well... so, I had to post this.

The Big Chicken, landmark extraordinaire and the pride of Marietta, Georgia, reopened on May 11, 2017. To honor the Big Chicken's return, we made a movie. Now, without further ado, KFC Films presents Big Chicken. Small Movie.

A new animated short, Big Chicken Small Movie, pays homage to Marietta, GA’s beloved 56-foot-tall steel fowl. In the film, a young boy who’s a bit of an outcast finds a friend in the gigantic steel chicken, and they go on an adventure in North Georgia.

For KFC franchisee owner and VP of marketing for KBP Foods Anthony Gianino, the film marks the culmination of an exciting project. The beloved “Big Chicken” KFC restaurant reopened to the public May 11 following a $2.2 million renovation.

“The Big Chicken has been a local pop culture icon since 1963. There was a board game in the 70s and for years the Marietta History Museum’s most popular souvenirs have been Big Chicken shirts, ornaments and even bird houses. On New Year’s Eve, Marietta doesn’t drop a disco ball, they drop a Big Chicken,” said Gianino. “And, now, there’s Big Chicken Small Movie -- a sweet celebration of a Georgia town and a giant steel chicken.”

From the beginning, the intention was to make this film as Atlanta-focused as possible. The creative team from Wieden+Kennedy Portland, KFC’s creative agency, is from the Atlanta-area, and Atlanta-based animation studio Awesome Inc was tapped to bring the short film to life.

“We were so excited when W+K reached out to us about the Big Chicken project,” said Awesome Inc founder/EP Ashley Kohler. “As a native Atlantan, I’ve grown up knowing and loving the giant KFC icon. Having this opportunity to work with a world-class agency on a local symbol, something dear to our hearts, was like winning the lottery. We can’t say enough about how collaborative, kind, and supportive W+K has been, how incredible the people we’ve met from KFC were, or how beautiful the renovation is at the franchise. We hope everyone gets a chance to see it at some point!”

For Awesome Inc, known for its TV and commercial work, Big Chicken Small Movie was the perfect blend of interests and the opportunity to honor the local monument in a charming, design-driven tale of friendship that launched on Sunday, August 6: National Friendship Day.

“I remember the first time I saw the big chicken. I was driving around Marietta doing errands and wham! There it was. I thought it was so amazing that I stopped to take a photo and post to my Instagram,” Awesome’s design director, Craig Sheldon, shared. “It’s been really fun and an honor to work on a short revolving around this iconic piece of Atlanta history. Wieden+Kennedy had a really inspiring vision for the project and it’s been a joy collaborating with them throughout the process.”

The Story of Zero - Getting Something from Nothing

What is zero? How did it come about? Hannah Fry tells the story of how zero went from nothing to something.

Once upon a time, zero wasn’t really a number. Its journey to the fully fledged number we know and love today was a meandering one. Today, zero is both a placeholder, and tool, within our number system signifying an absence of a value, and as a number in its own right.

But it wasn’t always seen as that, and it still doesn’t act quite like other numbers. Can you divide by zero, for example? Hannah Fry explains how zero came about, from its origins in ancient civilisations, through the resistance it faced from the Roman numeral system, to being the cornerstone of calculus.

"Travelling Through Brush and Ink" is a stop-motion animation of a little modern man traveling through four significant ancient Chinese paintings, transforming himself into animals and plants, and becomes part of the nature. Each painting represents four important stages of landscape art in Chinese history. Based on the original paintings, we built the sets and animated little character inside- all frame by frame. The animation is the opening film of 2016 annual exhibition National Palace Museum Taiwan.

Summary From Neil Tolman

I'm a huge fan of @guweiz's work, and was particularly taken by his painting "After Practice". Heading into Christmas break 2016, I really wanted to jump into a passion project to keep me on my toes, and I thought back to this painting. This would be a huge undertaking, and would really challenge my creativity and problem-solving skills. -- Perfect! I freakin' LOVE a challenge.

I spent about 60 hours in total over the course of three months on my spare time. I was pretty much done with the visuals within a few weeks, and spent the rest of the time adding in little details like exhaust fumes on the cars, the breeze moving through the trees, drips coming off the umbrella, etc. I absolutely loved working on this, and appreciate @guweiz's for painting such inspiring works. We have been working together since 2002, merging an atmospheric photographic style

with fantastical animated elements. We like to call it Casual Fantasy.

Sulkybunny is a boutique production company specialising in unique looking mix of live action and CG animation.  We produce Music Promos, Commercials and short films.

We were nominated for a BAFTA, with our first short film "Turning”  (BBC, Lighthouse and Creative England), which then went on to feature at festivals worldwide winning at least three.

Our second short film “Flytopia” (Film4, Creative England) based on a dark fantastical Will Self story, Score by Adrian Utley,  toured the film festival circuit winning a few.  Very buzzZZZY and itchy.

Our Music promo "Float" Won The  Annecy Animation Festival and the British Animation Awards.

"Winter Trees" our promo for the talented Staves, has picked up Best Promo in Encounters Film Festival and featured in many others.

We love top shots, cross sections, weird animation & fantasy, hybrid animals, Edward Gorey, Frida Khalo, Pina Bausch, Tom Waits, Woody Allen, French films, Polish animation, warm and funny people. We are slight hypochondriacs but make up for it with our charming fabulous personalities.

Three Ireland - The Girl and The Cloud

In 2014, Dublin agency BOYS & GIRLS helped Three Ireland tell the heart-warming Christmas story of one little girl's 'Perfect Surprise', when her Dad brought her back her very own snow cloud. This year's campaign continues that story and imagines what came next - in an animated storybook form.

This charming 2min 50" film illustrates the ensuing friendship between Anna and her cloud ever since that memorable Christmas morning. For a while everything is all fun & games, but as time passes and seasons change, Anna realises that her cloud is unhappy as the weather gets warmer. As Christmas approaches, Anna's only wish is to return her friend home ...

This heartfelt spot was adapted & directed by STUDIO AKA's PHILIP HUNT from an original story by the team at Boys & Girls, and produced in record time working with a specialist crew assembled at RED KNUCKLES under lead artists MARIO UCCI & RICK THIELE. A dedicated group of animators brought the characters to life within a look which drew directly from original artwork by designers OLGA STERN & AMANDINE PECHARMAN.

Using a projection texturing method to create a unique look somewhere between 2D & 3D, the production team worked round the clock to blend the 2D artwork with 3D Cgi characters, and the final touches were provided by composer Denis Kilty and the wonderful tones of narrator Ciaran Hinds.

The film will air on RTE and social media in the run-up to Christmas, and will be available to view, in full, online. A 60" & 40" cut down will also run on TV throughout November and December.

Denise : a Supinfocom graduation movie, coming in 2014

Denise is the story of an obese young woman, going on a hiking trip to Easter Island. Despite her little ‘problem’ (she has trouble moving around, is easily exhausted, etc), she decides to walk through the island, and enjoy its beautiful landscapes and mysterious statues. Denise is a journey towards self acceptance and achievement.

From Blog: Hey guys ! I realized recently that I kept telling you that I had a lot of work on my graduation project, but I never talked about it here on tumblr ! So here we are, Denise… I wrote the first script on my own almost 2 years ago, as well as the first concepts. Then, I had the chance to work with the best classmates I could ever wish for, so we’re now 6 working on Denise, co-directing it and trying to make the movie as beautiful and moving as possible !

So yeah, the original idea was by yours truly, and because of it, I’m the lead director, but I’m also in charge of all the visual development and concepts annnd.. lead lighting artist.  Yup. total dictatorship going on here !

This movie will be done entirely in cg, with Autodesk Maya, but we’re trying to stick with the 2D look of the concepts I did ! And let me tell you it’s definitely a challenge >.< !

MIDDLE SCHOOL - Exploring Rafe's Mind Featurette

That's my co-author at :36 in, Jamie Oliff, at Duncan Studio!

Making of Middle School . A real image film that combines animation 2d when we get into the head of the teenager. The animation is made Duncan Studio and have participated grandísimos Spanish artists Borja Montoro, Joseph Mansuy and Juan Pablo Navas .

Rafe has an epic imagination…and a slight problem with authority. Both collide when he transfers to an oppressive, rule-crazy middle school. Drowning in do’s and don’ts, Rafe and his scheming best friend Leo hatch a plan to break every rule in the school’s Code of Conduct. It’s Ferris Bueller meets Home Alone as their battle with Principal Dwight explodes into chaos both real and imagined. But Dwight displays his own fiendish creativity, striking back at the rulebreakers. Meanwhile, Rafe struggles to hide his misbehavior from Jeanne, the straight-A, overachieving girl of his dreams, and at home, his mother’s boyfriend — a moochy, jack-of-no-trades named Bear — threatens to become his stepfather.

LOAD

LOAD from “Load” – Short film on Vimeo.

How do we perceive our past? Do we need it to acknowledge our own existence? Do we needlessly carry it as a burden on our shoulders? Should we guard it even at the cost of our own future? What would we give up to survive?
Why is it so hard to let go?

LOAD is an award winning animated short film and the filmmaker’s journey to seek answers for these questions.
