Kobe Bryant And Glen Keane - Dear Basketball

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMMaFeDy8Rk

From Hollywood Reporter

With animation and a score by two legends — Glen Keane and John Williams, respectively — the five-minute-and-22-second-long film about the L.A. Laker great's relationship with basketball looks like a formidable contender.

Few, if any, animated shorts have ever had the bona fides of Dear Basketball, a five-minute-and-22-second-long film about Los Angeles Laker great Kobe Bryant's life and career that was produced by the hometown hero himself, animated by Disney legend Glen Keane and scored by music legend John Williams. Now, appropriately enough, Kobe and Co. are set to crash the best animated short Oscar race.

Dear Basketball, a tearjerker inspired by the 2015 poem of the same name through which Bryant announced his retirement from the sport (he narrates the film, too), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April — and then, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, had an Oscar-qualifying run at Laemmle's Claremont 5 cinema in Claremont, Calif., in June.

While virtually anyone who can afford to make a movie and screen it for a week can claim to be Oscar-eligible, the fact is that Dear Basketball actually looks like a formidable contender.

The Story of Zero - Getting Something from Nothing

What is zero? How did it come about? Hannah Fry tells the story of how zero went from nothing to something.

Once upon a time, zero wasn’t really a number. Its journey to the fully fledged number we know and love today was a meandering one. Today, zero is both a placeholder, and tool, within our number system signifying an absence of a value, and as a number in its own right.

But it wasn’t always seen as that, and it still doesn’t act quite like other numbers. Can you divide by zero, for example? Hannah Fry explains how zero came about, from its origins in ancient civilisations, through the resistance it faced from the Roman numeral system, to being the cornerstone of calculus.

**Winner of Worldfest Huston International Film Festival 2017**
"Travelling Through Brush and Ink" is a stop-motion animation of a little modern man traveling through four significant ancient Chinese paintings, transforming himself into animals and plants, and becomes part of the nature. Each painting represents four important stages of landscape art in Chinese history. Based on the original paintings, we built the sets and animated little character inside- all frame by frame. The animation is the opening film of 2016 annual exhibition National Palace Museum Taiwan.

-COCOON-

What is this? I don’t recognise this
Pain broke in
And took it all
Took the song from the Springtime
And the dance from the flame
Took the noonday warmth
And the morning hush

Now the ground’s spilling beneath me
The ropes are uncoiling
The trees are leafless
The sky is torn
My breath’s a broken feather
There’s no beauty left
There’s nothing here for me I’m paper thin
I’m in a room of shadows and it’s caving in
I’m turning in circles
I’m giving up
The world is giddy
The sense is gone
The floor is an ocean
I’m sinking in

Where are You now?
Where is Your touch?
Where is the reason?
The answer?
The end?
Now I’m chasing Your shadow
And I’m grasping for questions
I’m calling out
I’m asking why?

Yet when I turn You turn
When I reach You reach
And in the searing burn
You wait for me
Dress my tears in kisses
Cradle my grief
Touch me in the silence
Hold me in the heat
And when the ragings rush
Drown me in defeat
I make my bed of dust
And you lie with me

STEVEN UNIVERSE CREATOR REBECCA SUGAR ON ANIMATION AND THE POWER OF EMPATHY

Article - The Verge by

Western animation is in the middle of a golden age. Shows like BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty have emerged as the new standard-bearers for a kind of cartoon that’s sharp, funny, and insightful, capable of dealing with startlingly nuanced themes, like BoJack’s honest reflections on the nature of unhappiness. But few efforts in any medium can manage Steven Universe’s trick of exploring topics like intimacy, love, abuse, and the constant threat of annihilation while balancing them with thoughts on the simple joy of eating a hot dog. The series started out as a slice-of-life show about a young boy and his magical family, but it’s emerged as one of the most daring, open-hearted series on television today.

The creative force behind the series is Emmy-nominated writer Rebecca Sugar, Cartoon Network’s first female showrunner. Originally a storyboard revisionist for Adventure Time, she broke out on her own to launch Steven Universe in 2013, blending her love of superheroes and magical-girl anime with a story about a kid not unlike her own little brother, Steven Sugar. Four years later, the show has gotten much more complicated; a recent arc sees Steven abducted by his alien enemies, and being put on trial for his mother’s ancient war crimes. But at its heart, the show is still very much about relationships and family in all their forms.

Zed: Death Mark | League Animation Workshop

https://youtu.be/5nzeQ-vHF34

From Riot Animation Workshop:

Riot has a history of technical experiments and character studies that usually aren’t slated for release as standalone pieces. Instead, creations of this kind tend to be absorbed in the development process, rolled up into the colorful katamari of a more ambitious final product.

Among these creations are a slew of short animations we’ve gathered together and called the League Animation Workshop—a collection straight from the workstations of Riot animators, exploring familiar champions in vastly different styles, techniques, settings, and moods.

Some of what you’ll see is standard “fight porn”like a ninja slicing and dicing a squad of Noxians. Other animations hint at a world outside the frame, or give an impression of what champions are like when they’re not busy bashing one another on the Rift. All represent the craft and care that gives the champions of League of Legends a life beyond the game.

We hope you enjoy this look into our workshop.
