LESSONS: Ten Things to Think About

RHYTHM

Rhythm in Storytelling, Timing and Poses

In animation, rhythm pertains to the timing and pacing of actions, often referred to as “beats” or “tempo”. Effective animation maintains an unpredictable rhythm, adding intrigue to the scene. In addition to timing, A well-crafted pose rhythm incorporates diverse elements such as alternating tilts, twists, flowing movements, and distinctive silhouettes to create engaging and dynamic poses.

Every scene, regardless of its length, follows a narrative arc comprising a beginning, middle, and end, punctuated by three key points, ideas, or emotions. Rhythm is instrumental in crafting tension and excitement within storytelling.

Observe the rhythmic progression in the scene where Mr. Incredible returns home from work. His movements escalate, culminating in the bubble pop—a metaphorical exclamation point. Consider this scene as a musical composition: where does it crescendo, and where does it ebb? Caesura—a poignant beat in music—is a crucial point of division, emphasizing the significance of both quiet and active moments in storytelling for this scene.

“Mickey’s Little Whirlwind” illustrates rhythmic storytelling, transitioning from innocence to chaos, creating peaks and valleys of tension. Remember, every remarkable scene, regardless of its duration, maintains a rhythmic flow.

I love how the leaves exhibit personalities comparable to the main character in certain shots. As the animator, your task is to convey the scene’s energy through the character’s movements and other elements such as props and the environment. The whirlwind inside the bag, mimicking the actions of a horse and a boxing glove, showcases fun creativity.

Rhythm extends to poses as well:

  • The arc from one pose to another, leveraging physics while maintaining clean lines.
  • Manipulate physics to enhance poses, ensuring every element contributes to the composition

Mike Matessi teaches drawing online and supports the ideas of rhythm in a drawing.  I HIGHLY recommend his classes, memberships, and workshops! I do not believe you have to draw to be a rgeat animators, but it sure helps with your appeal in poses.
